Which of these 3 mistakes are you making when mowing your lawn

Mistake #1 Mowing Height.

Many make the mistake of cutting their lawn shorter than they should. This is not healthy or beneficial in any way. Short-cut lawns expose surface roots to the hot sun, which can dry out and die in no time at all. Not only that, weed and insect are more likely to attack because the grass is stressed and weak from being over cut.

Here is what to do instead. As a general guideline never remove more than 1/3 of the grass blade. Depending on your lawn type, more or less can be cut-off. But play it safe and do not cut any more than the top one-third of the grass blade.

Mistake #2 Dull Blades

Mistake number two is often over looked yet it can have a major impact on the appearance and health of your lawn. Correct this problem and your mowing gets easier while saving you time and effort. Have I got your attention? Good. What were talking about here is your mower blade being dull as a butter knife.

A dull mower blade tears, rips and hacks the grass blade off instead of neatly and evenly cutting it. The result is a lawn that takes on a faint white sheen, heals slowly, and invites pests and disease. You don’t want that do you? Of course not.

Here’s the solution.

Regularly have your blades sharpened by a professional. Or, if you have your own tools, sharpen the blades yourself. When is the best time to do this? After mowing kneel down and break-off a few blades of grass and give it a good looking over. It should have a evenly cut surface across the width of the blade. If it has peaks and valleys like a mountain its time to give it a sharpening.

Mistake # 3 Mowing a wet Lawn

A common mistake homeowners make is mowing their lawn when its wet. For starters it’s messy, chokes out your mower and takes twice as long to finish mowing. But here is where the real problem lies.

Cutting a lawn that is wet creates gobs of grass, which clump together and develops fungus. Left unchecked, the fungus spreads to other parts of your lawn. What happens next is the lawn becomes sickly requiring treatment to save it from an early grave. If you must cut your lawn while its wet make sure you remove all the clippings before calling it quits for the day.

Warm Weather Pool Maintenance Tips

Depending on where you live, most pool owners look forward to the warm weather all year long. Some are luckier than others with longer warm weather seasons, but not matter where you live; the long and hot days are probably a big part of what prompted you to want a pool in the first place.

Warmer weather typically means more people are using your pool, and it is important to remember that your pool needs additional maintenance at this time of the year. Here are some quick tips to help you keep your pool sanitized and clean all summer long so you can get maximum enjoyment.

Warm weather tips for maintaining your pool:

- Add chemicals during the evening, not during the day. This is especially true for liquid chlorine. Less of the chemicals will evaporate off, so you will be able to adjust the balance of the pool more easily this way and get more of an adjustment from the same amount of the chemical.

- Double your maintenance efforts, especially when it comes to checking the pool’s chemistry. Between the higher temperatures and more people in the pool, the chemistry is likely to shift more frequently and more significantly than during rest of the year.

- Make additional adjustments to filtering and other systems as necessary. With the additional demands on the pool, the filter may need to be cleaned more often or simply run for more hours each day.

- Add more water. You should be checking the water level pretty regularly anyway, because the systems that filter and regulate the pool need the water level to be high enough so that they do not push air through the system instead of the water. With greater heat, more water evaporates than normal, so you may need to add significantly more water during the summer than during the rest of the year.

- Consider hiring a pool service. During the summer, people travel more often, schedules change regularly, and it can be easy to slip up on pool maintenance. It is much more of a hassle to correct a major imbalance than to simply maintain the correct pH. And don’t forget, the less time you have to spend maintaining the pool, the more time you can spend enjoying it, so why not let someone else do the work?

Remember, as with most household related items, regular maintenance is the key to avoiding inconvenience later or even costly problems. If you follow these tips, you should be able to enjoy your pool as long as the weather allows you to – no matter where you live!

Lawn Ornaments You Must Have & Why

When I was younger and heard the term lawn ornaments I would think of pink flamingos and huge statues in the middle of a flower bed or garden. Although these are still popular lawn décor across America’s lawns, lawn ornaments have actually come a long way and consist of a variety of items today. I will discuss three particular kinds of lawn ornaments, bird feeders, wind spinners, and garden statues, and the purpose each has in your lawn.

Supplying bird feeders in your backyard provides access to one of the most popular outdoor hobbies in America, bird watching. Bird feeders are a great way to interact with wild life. The longer you establish bird feeders in your backyard, the more birds will come and go and come back again the next migrating season. Bird feeders provide food for wild birds; which may be especially helpful when food is scarce or right before migrating season or just a plane energy boost they can rely on. The purpose of bird feeders is not only to feed birds but they can also decorate your backyard. Some feeders are designed with the purpose of just feeding but others are designed to provide food and decorate your outdoors. Feeders can be posted, mounted and hung so it’s easy to find a place for one or two.

Wind spinners can have a lot of purposes in your backyard. Because they come in all different shapes, sizes and colors, they are fun to pick out and decide where you want to hang them. Wind spinners can be hung from tree branches, from hook stands in the middle of the yard or along the outside of the house, porch brackets, from the ceiling of the porch, decks, gardens, and many more places. You can buy solar light wind spinners, gazing ball wind spinners and themed wind spinners. Solar light spinners are wonderful because they decorate and light up an area. So you can enjoy them both day and night! Gazing ball spinners are a popular wind spinner as you will find a lot of gazing balls in the middle of flower gardens and such. If you have a smaller area to work that adding a large gazing would just overcrowd it, a gazing ball wind spinner might be just right for you. Themed wind spinners are long spinners (about 16″ in length) that provide three different pictures of one theme. For example, for a USA theme you might see an eagle head at the top, the American flag in the center and the letters USA at the bottom. These make great gifts for those who have a garden theme in which one of these themed wind spinners carry.

Garden statues are popular in almost any outdoor enthusiast’s garden. They can range from large lion statues to big cement bird baths and garden gnomes to Mickey Mouse figurines. Garden statues have represented a status symbol in the past. Maybe such representation still exists, however, there are a whole line of different kinds of garden statues you can put in your backyard today. Garden statues can set the mood in your garden. Do you want a playful fun garden theme? Choose garden statues such as garden gnomes or popular animal statues (maybe from TV). If you want a more quite reflective garden, you may want to find angel and cherub garden statues. And if you are looking to create a garden or front/back yard that represents power or confidence, garden statue lions or historical sculptures may be to your liking. Whatever the theme you should be able to find some garden statues that suit your needs.

When choosing lawn ornaments for your garden it’s always nice to find things that have a purpose. And some things you just have to have because it’s cute or on sale. Whatever your reasons are, bird feeders, wind spinners and garden statues are just a few lawn ornaments that can serve a purpose in your garden. Any three of these lawn ornaments are absolute must-haves for your garden. Other lawn ornaments to consider are garden planters, bird houses, bird baths, wind chimes and stepping stones.

The Black Walnut

The Black Walnut, scientifically known as Juglans nigra, is a flowering tree that belongs to the hickory family. This species of tree is native to eastern North America. It grows mainly in riparian zones, from places such as south Ontario, South Dakota, Georgia, central Texas and northern Florida.

Appearance

This tree is a large deciduous species that can grow to heights of forty feet. If it faces forest competition, it will develop a tall, clear bole. Unlike the open-grown form, it doesn’t have a short bole with a broad crown. The Black Walnut has a grey-black bark which is deeply furrowed. The centre of the twigs has air spaces in it. The leaves are alternate and pinnate, with the largest leaves being found in the centre.

Flowers and fruits

The flowers of this tree are monoecious. The male flowers form drooping catkins that are around ten centimetres long while the female flowers are terminal and are found on short spikes towards the twig’s end. They are yellow green in colour and bloom somewhere around late spring. They are found in clusters of two to five and ripen during autumn into a fruit that has a greenish-brown, semi-fleshy husk surround a brown, corrugated nut. The entire fruit, with the husk included, falls in October. The seed is quite small is extremely hard. This nut has sweet, oily meat within it that is edible. It matures from near late summer to fall. These trees usually crop more heavily every alternate year.

Uses

The Black Walnut has many uses, from its wood to its nut. The nuts from these trees are used commercially all over the United States. The nutmeats have a distinctive, robust, natural flavour and crunch, which makes it a good food ingredient. It is used widely in banking, confection and ice cream.

Producers use these walnuts in many traditional treats like cookies, cakes, pies and fudge during fall holidays. The fact that this nut has a strong nutritional profile means that it used in many foods such as fish, chicken, pork, salads, vegetables and pasta dishes. This walnut has a high unsaturated fat percentage and protein but has no cholesterol, making it quite healthy.

The Black Walnut is highly valuable due to its true, dark-coloured heartwood. Although it is strong and heavy, it can be easily split and worked. Walnut wood has been used throughout history for making furniture, paddles, flooring, coffins, gunstocks and many other woodwork products. It is so important that walnut poachers are being tracked down. The density of this tree’s wood makes it lighter than oak wood.

The seeds give out a meat that can be converted into a brownish-black dye. This was used by early settlers to dye their hair. Extracts of the outer soft part of the fruit are used even today as a natural dye for some handicrafts. The walnut has tannins in it that act as a mordant, making the dyeing process easier. It is used as a wood stain or as dark ink.

London Based Garden Design and the City Influence.

Forget the Chelsea Flower Show, the Grow-All-Your-Own-Food-in-a-Bucket movement and old Uncle Alan Titmouse and all. This elusive creature, the London fashion, is moving into minimalism in gardens.

How very stylish some of these gardens are. Cool grained marble slabs combined with the clean lines of clumps of green bamboo and built-in hardwood benches. A waterfall over granite rocks, clumps of dripping ferns, pale grey limestone slabs, a topiary corkscrew yew. A central thick-glass-covered pool of clear water above blue tiles, warm honey-coloured sandstone slabs, and a single grey-green olive tree. These are all descriptions of award-winning gardens, although gardening had very little to do with them. All are carefully enclosed and screened – completely private.

Another Designer of the Year award-winning garden on a roof terrace outside a penthouse combines smooth pebbles, hardwood paths and slate slab seating areas together with formal planting of palms, grasses and bamboo to create an extraordinary sense of being on top of the world. No need of screening for privacy here and one of the best views of the city.

The more exciting London garden designers have moved towards a much more austere concept. This is in keeping with modern trends in architecture, where pure functionalism has at last been banished and deceptively simple classic lines are once again making London one of the finest cities in the world.

The strict architectural elements, the use of water, the carefully controlled and sculpted, and rather sparse, vegetation, have nothing at all in common with the English concept of a garden, the exuberant, slightly lawless, flower-filled embarras des richesse. The more recent London garden is not a recreation and even less is it a green space dedicated to mowing and keeping the stomach muscles in trim. It has little to do with gardening and a great deal to with art.

This is the cultural centre of the world. London is where fashion begins, but, as always, London fashion is a distillation of all that the great city garners from other cultures. These gardens have faint memories of the great enclosed gardens of early Islam. They owe something to Japan. But they are neither Islamic not Japanese gardens. There is a new originality in these designs, with their use of smooth stone, empty space, curving walls, sculptured plants, and above all – lack of clutter – that is very modern London.

How to Grow Columbine in Your Flower Garden

Aquilegia, also known as columbine, is an old-fashion favorite that looks great in the garden and makes decorative cut flowers. These hardy, herbaceous evergreen perennials are found in the wild throughout North America, Siberia and other northern temperate regions. The columbine is known for its beautiful, distinctively spurred flowers that are produced in the summer months. Numerous cultivars and hybrids are available in a multitude of colors and styles. Most columbines grow to a height of 15 to 20 inches and are a favorite of hummingbirds. This article will discuss how to grow columbines for your garden.

The columbine can survive in a range of locations. USDA hardiness ranges from Zone 3 to 9. In colder areas, zones 3-5, it is advisable to provide a good layer of mulch to protect the columbine from the freeze thaw cycle.

The columbine is an easy plant to grow in your garden because it readily adapts to a wide variety of conditions. For the best results, use an area that has a moist, rich, well-drained soil with partial shade. The especially like the light shade of large deciduous trees. It will grow in full sun and is able to tolerate average soils and dry soil conditions.

Seeds of the columbine can be directly sown into the soil or started indoors. To start indoors the seeds will need to be cold stratified for the best germination. Place the seeds in seed trays or pots with ¼ inches of fine soil and refrigerate at 40 degree Fahrenheit for 3 to 4 weeks. Move the trays or pots to a 70 degree location where they will sprout. Sow columbine outdoors in spring to early summer in the north and fall in the south. Cover with a thin layer of soil and separated by 1 to 2 feet.

The thick tap roots of the columbine allow for medium to light watering once the plant is established. Fertilize the columbine monthly with a soluble all-purpose fertilizer. The columbine is a self-sower so if you do not deadhead the blossoms and prune the foliage in the fall be prepared to thin out the seedlings as they arise. The plants tend to die off after 3 or 4 years so some gardeners allow the plant to self-seed and keep the plants whose flower they like as cross-pollination will produce different flowers from the parents. Leaf miners and aphids are the main problems for this plant. Most insect problems can be effectively treated with insecticidal dust or spray. If you notice winding white trails in the leaves dispose of this foliage.

The flowering season for columbine lasts from mid-May through the end of June. Remove flower heads or deadhead when flowers are spent to ensure continued bloom. The blooms have five spurred petals sitting above five petal-like sepals that combine to create beautiful color combinations. The plant continues to provide interest as its foliage turns a maroon color in the fall.

It is quite easy to grow columbine in your garden. With the proper location, soil and light, water and fertilizer, as well as, watching out for the insects you will grow the most beautiful columbine plants.

American Elm Trees

American Elm Trees are sometimes referred to as Water Elms or White Elms. This species of tree is native to North America, and can be found from Nova Scotia to British Columbia, along with central Texas and Florida. It is one of the toughest species of tree as it can survive in winter with temperatures as low as below forty four degrees. Along with this, if it manages to escape contracting Dutch Elm disease, it can live for hundreds of years.

Appearance

American Elm Trees have a crown that leads into a very high, spread out canopy with lots of open air space underneath. These trees are hermaphroditic and so can self pollinate. They have small, brown-purple flowers that are wind pollinated, and they turn up before the leaves do in early spring. The fruits produced are flat and have circular wings around the lone seed so that it can be wind propagated.

Uses

For many years now American Elms have been used as a street tree and as a shade tree, mainly due to the beautiful arching growth form it has and how tolerant it is to stress factors. It has cross grained wood, which makes it very strong so that the branches rarely ever break. The species have been planted quite far from its natural range and still survived harsh conditions such as the desert heat of Phoenix, Arizona.

Diseases

Unfortunately, this tree is highly susceptible to DED, or Dutch elm disease, as well as Elm Yellows and Elm Leaf Black Spot. It has quite a few pests, including the elm leaf beetle, elm bark beetle and elm leaf miner. It’s quite easy to make sure none of these afflictions get to an elm tree, and so they can live for hundreds of years.

Care Tips

These trees need lots of care so that they stay healthy. Some form of care should be applied regularly while others are needed less frequently.

The tips of the roots should be soaked using a hose, but it is best to let the soil dry between watering sessions. If your lawn is yellowing, it is a sign that your elm needs water. The same is true if your elm tree has browning or wilting leaves. If your elm tree does not show any of these signs you can safely assume that it is not lacking water, but it is best to water it every few days anyway.

You need to fertilize it one or two times a year using slow release nitrogen. This way, your elm will continue getting its nutrients throughout the growing season. Make sure you buy one meant especially for elms, and that it is applied just under the grass roots.

Popularity

Despite needing more care than other trees, American Elm Trees are popular in many homes that have large gardens. Their large, dome-like canopy means it will provide plenty of shade under which most people like to set up a swing. The sturdy branches ensure that it is perfectly stable, and as such, many people are fond of having them in their backyard.

What You Need To Know On Orchids Growing

Orchids are one of the largest plant families in the world. There are over 25000 species as well a 100000 plus hybrids. Orchids growing has become popular not only for business but also making the hove beautiful. Demand for orchids is high; this can be attributed to the difficulty of growing them as they are delicate plants. You can however, learn and grow orchids for whatever reason you wish.

Knowing the orchid types is the first thing in your journey to growing orchids. Judging by the number of species around, it would be better to find out the most popular types of orchids. The most common are the corsage (cattelya), Singapore (dendrobium) and moth orchid (phalaenopsis).

Corsage orchids have large frilled blooms and come in white, pink, purple, yellow or striped color. The Singapore orchid has an average of ten flowers on every spray. They are cream, purple, green, red or striped. The moth orchid is perhaps the most popular of the three. It’s flat oval shape and long stalk make it distinct. Moth orchids are white, pink, purple or yellow.

The second thing you need to know is how to take care of the orchids. Caring for orchids is no easy task. This is because each type of orchid has its unique characteristics. You can start by identifying the native land for the particular species. This will give you a rough idea about the light, heat, nutrients, moisture and air requirements for the plant.

To identify if your orchid is getting enough light, look at the leaves. Orchids receiving adequate light should have a light green pigmentation. Dark green indicates little light while yellowing leaves indicate excess light. Moving your plant closer to a window should enable it receive enough light. Shading the plant should also take care of excess light.

Orchids also have different heat needs. The amount of heat and sunlight control development of flowers. Be sure to find out what heat requirements are necessary for your orchid. A good place to find this is your local florists shop.

Adding fertilizer is necessary for your orchid’s growth. The plants grow slowly and denying them nutrients could make it even slower.

Orchids require a well ventilated environment. This will enable them carry out photosynthesis and transpiration easily. These two processes are necessary for the growth of the orchid.

The frequency, water, time and technique employed in watering orchids is another thing to consider when growing orchids. Frequency is determined by the environment, type and size of pot and the orchid type. Water at least once a week during winter and twice a week during hot dry seasons. Water more if the pot size is small and highly porous. Orchids are usually grown on bark which absorbs water.

Orchids should be watered with clean chemical free water. Chemicals can harm the plant as it needs specific nutrients for growth. The water should be lukewarm. Always water in the morning to allow the leaves to dry by evening. With these in mind orchids growing should not be a hard task.
