It is safe to say, without fear of contradiction, that the Internet has had an effect on all types businesses in the world. In other words, there is no line of business that can be said not to have been affected by the Internet. Thus, whenever we are trying to analyze the effect of the Internet on a given business line, the question (nowadays) is never as to whether the business line has been affected by the Internet; but rather ‘how’ that particular line of business has been affected by the Internet. Take the example of the lawn care business (which is one of the businesses one would expect to have been least affected by the Internet). It turns out that there are actually numerous ways in which the lawn care business has been affected. We proceed to look at four of those ways in which lawn service firms have been affected by the Internet:

1. The Internet has provided a platform for lawn care firms to get in touch with their clients (and prospective clients) easily: before the advent of the Internet, most of these firms relied on telephone communications. But these tend to have some rather huge limitations, meaning that, due to communication problems, a considerable amount of business ended up getting lost. Today, all a lawn service firm has to do is to set up an email address, and it instantly opens up a 24/7 (24 hours, 7 days a week) open communication channel. It may not look like a big deal today, but three decades ago, this would have been a very great deal.

2. The Internet has provided a platform for lawn care firms to promote their businesses cost-effectively: through the Internet, and with as little as a hundred dollars, it is possible for a lawn service firm to launch a successful marketing campaign. Most of these firms have set up websites, which serve as major promotional tools (besides also being their communication vehicles, as they set up email addresses around them). Things have, of course, not always been this way. Before the advent of the Internet, the only major promotional channels open were the newspapers, TV and radio – whose charges tended to be beyond what most lawn service firms could afford.

3. The Internet has increased the level of competition in the lawn care industry: for one, thanks to the Internet, there is free flow of information in the market, and clients tend to know what the going rates are (meaning that lawn service firms have to charge their best rates, or be pushed out of business). Through the Internet, clients can also get to learn which the best rated and best reviewed lawn service firms are. This in turn means that all lawn service firms have to keep their best feet forward, or risk messing up with their online reputation through poor ratings/reviews.

4. The Internet has snatched some business from lawn care firms: through the Internet, some folks are able to learn how to do (by themselves) certain things they would otherwise have had to enlist the help of the lawn care firms for.

No one likes to have pests in or around their home. Whether it is insects or rodents, most homeowners will do whatever takes to get rid of the annoyances that have invaded their lives. However, most often, when the homeowner calls for a Phoenix pest control company, harsh chemicals are used immediately to get rid of the pests. For homeowners concerned about the environment, those who want to have a “green” home, this can be a very negative situation. The idea of being “green” is to protect the environment from pollution and excessive toxic chemicals, not add to it, so careful consideration should be made in the solutions necessary to control the pest issue.

For such homeowners, there is a solution: Integrated Pest Management or IPM. This process is considered a green pest control process. It is a bit more difficult to locate a pest control service company that actually provides a comprehensive IPM method of removing the pests, but the extra search will be worth the effort. In addition to being better for the environment, Integrated Pest Management services are better for the well-being of the homeowner and his family, especially the elderly, children, and those with sensitivities to harsh chemicals, because a number of steps will have been taken prior to grabbing the first pesticide available. It is not a difficult decision to make when it is thought of in these terms.

There are many innovative green pest control options available. An Integrated Pest Management system is the most professional pest control process available in today’s market, and is becoming the green pest control service of the future. The days of seeing pest control companies pulling large hoses off of trucks and liberally squirting pesticides all over the entire yard and grabbing their spray can and spraying every baseboard in your home are coming to an end. Even though some companies still utilize these old fashioned methods and say they are using “Green Chemicals”, that does not constitute a “Green Pest Control Service”, they are simply spraying a lot of something supposedly “Green”.

There are a lot of companies who only promote utilizing a “Green” product as a choice of pest control materials, however even the use of a Green product, can be potentially harmful if not properly applied. So don’t be fooled by companies only offering Green products, but not utilizing true Integrated Pest Management on your property – That is not a “Green Pest Control Service”.

On the commercial side of pest management, IPM is recognized as the Green Pest Management solution, and has been taken to the extreme by the Green Building Council of America, in the LEED certification of buildings, where IPM is one requirement of a LEED process, along with extensive reporting and even a pesticide application notification strategy.

Pesticides in themselves are not necessarily a bad thing, the overuse or misuse of a pesticide is in fact where the trouble lies whether it’s a regular product or “Green” product.

IPM Integrated pest management is a comprehensive system that utilizes the following processes:

* Inspection

- Presence or Absence inspection – may not have a problem at all?

- To determine what the pest problem is

- To determine why we have the pest problem

- To determine what must be done to prevent the pest problem

* Sanitation Recommendations

- Cleanliness is important – and a lack of proper sanitation can be the source of a pest problem.

* Exclusion

- Sealing holes, screening voids, keeping pests out to prevent a pest problem.

* Mechanical Controls

- Trapping

- Wiping down spider webs for example – stops/slows down the reproduction of the spider

* Biological Controls

- Affect a pest through systemic approach by changing the pest, food source, etc…

- Insect growth regulators

* Cultural Controls

- Change the human practices that are conducive to pest presence

- Change the specific site environment – ie… overwatering of grass – reset irrigation timers

* Judicious use of pest control materials

- Properly applied materials used when necessary

- The correct product for the pest in question

- Treatments performed in cracks and crevices, voids, and areas where inaccessible to pets and children whenever possible

* Education of and communication to the customer

- Teaching IPM and the customer’s role in pest prevention

- Detailed documentation of every visit

The key is finding an expert that specializes in Integrated Pest Management and can effectively apply these techniques to offer you a true “Green Pest Management Solution” for your home or business. For great green pest control in the Phoenix area, including Scottsdale, Glendale, Peoria, Avondale, Litchfield Park, Chandler, Tempe, Mesa, Cave Creek, Surprise and all other surrounding cities, an excellent company is Invader Pest Management. They will not only use a comprehensive IPM program to rid the home of pests, but come up with innovative ways to ensure that the pests will not return.
The time to start planning your spring flower garden is now and you may want to add Zinnias to your list of flowers and plants to pick up on your next trip to the nursery.

The National Garden Bureau has named 2011 The Year of The Zinnia, and with its magnificent color and long-lasting blooms it’s no wonder why. The Zinnia has been around for years and is widely used in gardens all across America. However many years of breeding and experimentation have gone into developing this eye catching flower.

There are more than a dozen species of Zinnias today with the Zinnia Elegans, or the common Zinnia being the most popular, because of its wide range of colors and height. Zinnias are easy to plant and maintain, and with its many variations of size, shape and color you’re sure to find just the right one for you.

Zinnias can be grown from seed or potted plants and should be readily available at your local nursery or garden center. Be sure to plant after the danger of frost and plant in an area with lots of sun (six or more hours per day). Because Zinnias grow best with lots of sun, regular watering is needed to keep the soil moist but well drained. This, and a fertilizer treatment or two, will keep your Zinnias blooming throughout the season.

To keep your plants compact and not too bushy, regular cutting of the blooms is necessary. Clip these flowers just above the leaves, and you can bring them inside
to enjoy. You should be able to keep them up to a week if properly maintained; and in the meantime a new blossom will already be taking shape where the former blossom was cut! Cutting the blooms should be done in the early morning, as the afternoon sun will cause the flowers to wilt and result in a shorter indoor life.

As you take care of your garden there are always some things to watch out for and Zinnias are no different. Keep on the look out for powdery mildew (a light grey mold) and alternaria blight (reddish / brown spots on the foliage and flowers). The best defense against these fungal diseases is by keeping the leaves of the plant dry and planting them with enough room so that air can circulate around the plants.

With just a little care, you should have plenty of Zinnias to enjoy in your garden this year.

Everyone knows that tomatoes need to be watered properly to extract the best and juiciest fruit. But what exactly does that mean and what is too little or too much water for a tomato vine? There is a happy balance to be struck when watering tomatoes and one way of achieving that balance in a very effective way is to employ the use of a self watering system for getting exactly the right amount of water to your tomato plants.

So why is a self watering system so effective?

In order to explain that you need to understand that tomatoes love the right amount of water. They will suffer badly if the soil they are planted in is allowed to go dry, but they can also be over watered which will impede the amount of air exchange between the soil and the roots. This will affect how well the plant grows and the amount of fruit they produce.

So what is required is a happy balance of keeping the soil moist whilst avoiding drenching of the roots. The watering program you implement will clearly need to take into account whether the plants are in a greenhouse, when they are entirely dependent on the watering program, or whether they are located in the garden, in which case they may get water if it rains.

Using a self watering system that can be controlled by a timer will help ensure that you can meter the water to meet your exact requirements, a little trickier for the second scenario admittedly but still very effective. The other benefit of course is that the method is not entirely dependent on someone actually doing the watering so if you have a busy lifestyle and are not always available the tomatoes still get the required quota of water.

There is a slight downside to self watering systems in that you are not necessarily inspecting your plants each day and you may miss the early signs of disease or insect infestation so you will need to pay particular attention to this aspect and try to look at your plants at least once a day. Well worth the effort for the better crops that can be yielded as a result.

So for happy, healthy and fruitful tomato vines, make sure that you pay particular attention to the watering program and whether you elect to water them yourself or use a self watering system, provide a happy medium about mid way between dry and drenched.

Can’t find the right words to express your feeling this Valentines Day? Don’t be pressured if you can’t think of anything to give in this special occasion. You might be wondering on how to convey your message to someone who captures the exact emotion that you felt inside. Maybe, your mind now is disturbed on what gifts to give to impress him or her.

Valentine’s Day is considered to be one of the most anticipated celebrations every year. This is the time to celebrate and to share love with everyone. Usually, in moments like this, we spent every dollar we’ve got to offer gifts to make someone special though we have to think that the most important is that the recipient will love it. And the usual issue in buying presents is if its gender restricted because it is really difficult to find an item that is unisex.

However, gift plants are perfect to be considered as one of the gift items that can be given to both sexes. Though normally, flowers are mostly given as a gift or token of love. But gift plants are even special since it will last as long as you take care of them. Have you ever tried to send plants this heart’s day instead of the typical chocolates and flowers? Surprise your special someone with a blooming gift plant in a cachepot or in a basket. Send plants to your family and friends and I’m sure they would love it.

A gift plant symbolizes love that is everlasting. Never underestimate its beauty and prowess to impress someone. And to make it more special, you can send plants right at her doorsteps on Valentine’s Day. Apart from the usual flowering gift plants, you can also give bonsai plants or bamboo plants. Bonsai plants are very unique because of its petite size and its undeniable charm while bamboo plants can be braid in hearts which can be perfect for the Heart’s Day.

It has been a tradition to send gifts on this day in memory of St. Valentine. For lovers most especially, it is usually a moment to spend time with each other and an opportunity to take a break from a busy schedule. Experience a romantic Valentine’s Day and discover the truest language of love this February.

Have you decided to grow a vegetable garden for the economy of it, or because you’d like to eat organic fruits and vegetables? Whatever the reason, planning a vegetable garden can be very rewarding.

Whether you have hardly any space or lots of space you can have a raised bed garden. You can make a raised garden bed out of pretty much anything that has sides; an old tire, a child’s swimming pool, or lumber nailed together. If you’d like the aesthetics to be a little more appealing, you can purchase special connectors and buy the lumber, or you can purchase the whole kit. Some of the complete kits use cedar, composite wood, or recycled plastic.

First, in planning a vegetable garden you must determine how many raised beds you will need. Are you growing all the vegetables you’ll eat or are you going to can them, or share with friends? If you have a small space or not enough time to devote to your garden, you can still have a garden, but start with one small bed.

Second, your vegetables will need eight hours of full sun every day. The plants need lots of sun to grow and produce. A southern exposure is ideal for vegetables. They also need plenty of water, but not so much that they will stagnate and sit in soil that won’t drain. You will also need to get water to the plants via hose or drip system. If you don’t mind carrying water you could also do that, but unless it’s a very short distance you will probably tire of that. Another plus with raised beds are; less evaporation which equals less watering. The sides of the bed contribute to preserving water and because the plants are closer together the shade keeps everything cooler so they don’t dry out as fast.

Third, you will need good soil. Fill the raised bed with a minimum of six inches of good soil. Remove any weeds underneath where the raised bed will be located and loosen the soil underneath so drainage and roots can continue beyond the raised bed depth.

Planning a vegetable garden would be nothing without the soil. Ideally your soil should contain a mixture of top soil, compost and peat moss or perlite or vermiculite. This combination will provide the plants with loose soil that will drain well and also retain moisture.

Fourth are the types of vegetables for your garden. If your passion is cooking you would probably want to plant herbs, different varieties of onions or peppers, etc. If you like canning you can enjoy your garden all year, and you would probably want to plant cucumbers for pickles, beets, beans, etc. But, don’t plant too many in one bed; the plants need room to grow.

Last but not least, enjoy and have fun. Planning a vegetable garden can get you in touch with mother nature and reduce stress; so not only are you eating healthy but living healthier.

The city garden needs to be an oasis from the world outside, a haven that you can relax in. Three starting points to get there.

1. Enclose the garden. With luck the city garden already has walls round it – they may look ugly and depressing right now, but that is going to change. If the garden doesn’t have walls, put up some sort of boundary fencing between it and the neighbours. Panel fencing is relatively cheap and easy to put up. A featherboard fence will last longer and need less maintenance but takes more time and skill to erect. Once you have your boundary wall or fence, turn it green. Do this either by growing clematis, honeysuckles and climbing roses up it, which will be lovely in the summer, but less interesting in winter, or by having a line of small This will also prevent any problems with roots going through into neighbouring gardens.

2. Pave the centre of the garden. Lay stone slabs down in sand to make a paved surface. Otherwise, in a small space you will have a mudbath in winter and a scorched area in summer. Leave a good yard round the outside of the paved area, filled with gravel to allow drainage from the slabs. The better quality slabs you can afford, the better the end result. If you can only afford concrete, have a gravel garden instead and grow herbs which will self-seed into it.

3. Round the outside of the paved area grow a selection of perennial flowers and small bushes in front of the trees or climbers. Grow your plants in containers, not plastic if you can avoid it. Unglazed clay pots are lovely but will crack in freezing conditions, so go for wooden tubs, stone troughs or glazed pots. The container method allows you to move plants around and change the appearance - important in a small space. If you want a garden that will require very little care, grow rosemary, bay, sage and lavender, all of which grow into good sized bushes and keep their leaves and colour throughout the year without any attention, apart from a little protection for the bay from frost.

Installing a garden pond where you are going to also want to include a waterfall, means that you will have to look at the assortment of waterfall pumps that are available, and choose the one that is going to best suit your needs.

Often individuals that are new to the world of garden ponds wonder if it is really necessary to have two pumps for their water garden. They know of course that they should have the appropriate pump for the circulation of the water, but wonder if this one pump is sufficient for the waterfall as well.

Ideally to keep the pond in its optimum health it is advisable to have two pumps as they each have a specific job to do. The waterfall pumps are required to pump the water through the waterfall to create the effect of flowing water.

Some thought must be put into the requirements that the waterfall pump is going to have to meet. It first has to be determined how much water there is that the waterfall will be moving. Then you need to determine the flow rate. In order to determine this, start by measuring the height of the drop of the waterfall.

Start by measuring from the top of the head of the waterfall down to where the pump is located. So if your pump is going to be resting at the bottom of your 3′ pond and you want a 6′ waterfall flow, then your head height would be 9′.

Knowing the width of the stream of your waterfall is going to be important also, to help you determine your pump size. In most cases a waterfall that is considered standard, needs a pump that would be able to pump through 100 gallons of water hourly for every inch of the width of your waterfall stream.

So if the width of your waterfall stream is 7″, then you need to have a pump that is capable of pumping through 700 gallons of water per hour. Using this information along with the information you gathered for height requirement will give you what you require for pump size. In our example, you would need a waterfall pump capable of pushing 700 gallons of water for a head height of 9 feet.

There are all makes and models of pumps on the market that vary in price. Ideally though, you want to invest in a good quality pump. Sometimes purchasing what may seem like a bargain at the time can just lead to a lot of costly problems with your garden pond in the future.

When it comes to choosing your waterfall pump or your circulation pump you will have choices such as those that are completely submersed in the water, or sit above ground. It will be a matter of personal choice. Remember though, that if you purchase an external pump you will have to provide proper protection for it from the elements as this type must be kept dry.

Tree houses are structures built amongst the branches or within the outer structure of a tree. They are normally raised above the ground and are made of wooden materials such as timber. They can be lived in as a permanent housing solution, or they can be used as a playhouse for younger children.

What are Tree Houses used for?

When you think of a tree house, you automatically think of a house, which is used by young mischievous children. However they are also seen as an environmentally friendly way of building housing in forestry areas. Because they are raised off the ground, it is not necessary to destroy plants and tress to build them. Therefore they can solve the problem of housing in an area where people might have lived in tents or built houses on top of wildlife areas. In some countries they live in tree houses, not just to save the environment but also to protect their homes, food and belongings from wild animals.

What are They Made of?

Wood is usually the main component used when building a tree house, however they may have metal framework. Sometimes recycled materials are used, majority of the time, doors and windows are items that may have been claimed from junk yards or building site waste. This is a cost effective, eco-friendly way of building a tree house.

How popular are Tree Houses?

Tree Houses, have become more popular in recent years, countries such as the United States and even the UK have seen a rise in the use of tree houses for recreational purposes. Most people build tree houses for their children to use as a play house, or a hideaway. However some people also use tree houses as an alternative home office or extra room.

There has been a major surge in the popularity of tree houses, with there being so many different styles to choose from, it can be hard to pick. However, gone are the days when you just built your tree house for your son or daughter yourself. There are a few very good professional tree house building companies out there. Most of them offer some very competitive prices, as well as a wide range of styles to suit your needs. Tree houses are making a comeback, and they are not just for the goonies in the 1980′s film by the same name. They are pretty much for everyone. With retro styling being considered “cool” tree houses are welcome additions to the list of all things retro.
